Question of the Month
|
Here is the December
question:
For many
people, the new year is a time for making resolutions and setting goals.
What are some of your writing resolutions or goals for 2008?
Any great research trips planned? Writing in a new genre? A new series?
Redoing your office? Let us know a little about what 2008 looks like for
you.
Julie Miller: My number one writing goal this year is to stay
on schedule because I'm adding in two extra books to the number I've been
writing the past 2-3 years. Hopefully, I'll be able to actually get ahead of
schedule so that I can complete that fifth and sixth book without stressing
too much. Writing my own four book mini-series (The Precinct: Brotherhood
of the Badge) has proven to be as challenging as it is exciting because
of the suspense elements that are a part of each individual book, as well as
the story arc that crosses all four stories. And those who've read me, know
how I like a good twisty mystery! So there's a lot of story there. I think
it'll prove to be an exciting series for the readers as well. The
mini-series launches in June of this year with Protective Instincts, and
follows in July with Armed and Devastating. But I still have
to finish the third and fourth books, as well as write two Blaze projects
(one to celebrate Harlequin's 60th anniversary in 2009!) and one more
Intrigue.
A secondary goal is to finish up my single title paranormal manuscript. I'll
share more details on that project as I know more. But that's another
project I plan to finish this year. So, amongst all those other time
commitments (like my son's graduation, at least one national conference and
one regional writers retreat, teaching part-time and lots more), staying on
track in 2008 will make all my other writing goals fall into place!
Dana Marton: My writing goal for 2008 is to create stories that will
take readers on fast-paced adventures around the world. I visited Cyprus a
while back. I'd like to return there and research that location for a spy
thriller. A new year is always so exciting and so full of possibilities. I'm
looking forward to getting to know my new heroes and falling in love with
them as I write.
B.J. Daniels: I do love the new year and that feeling of a new
beginning. I always have lots of goals. Goal #1: I'm having such a ball with
my Whitehorse series. There are so many more mysteries including illegally
adopted babies to uncover. The series continues in April with
Matchmaking With a Mission and May with Second Chance Cowboy.
Watch Romantic Times Magazine for my article about Second Chance
Cowboy -- and redeeming heroines -- in the May issue. But the
Whitehorse series doesn't end there. I'm coming back June, July and August
of next year with three more as the five Corbett brothers hit town.
Goal #2: Organize my office. Hey, it's got to be done. :) Goal #3: Write
that big book. This has been a long time coming and 2008 is the year. I'll
keep you posted.
Rita Herron: I'm excited to say that the New Year finds me working on
a new paranormal romantic suspense trilogy for Grand Central Publishing.
In fact, I'm working on revising the first book in the trilogy right now!
The book is scheduled for September '08, and we're talking titles for the
individual stories and series now. As soon as the revisions for book one are
done, I'm diving into writing the second book, then the third. Really fun to
mix my normal dark romantic suspense with a deeper paranormal hook! Of
course, I'll still be writing Intrigues - both my Nighthawk Island series,
another Texas Ranger book, and I'm starting a new mini series for Intrigue
that evolves around Missing Persons cases. To add to the list, I'm taking a
screenwriting class in February that I"m excited about. Haven't
decided yet what project I'll use for it-- I have a couple of different
ideas I'm toying with - one is a stand alone, paranormal romantic suspense,
and the other would be the beginning of yet a new paranormal series!
Ann Voss Peterson: 2008 is going to be a great year. One of the most
exciting new things for this year is the new Thriller subseries from
Harlequin Intrigue. It debuts with my March release, Wyoming Manhunt.
I've always loved the intensity and fast pace of the Intrigue line,
and this new subseries captures that feel then ramps it up a notch. As
always, I hope to do more writing and reading and traveling...and earning my
gold belt in my new karate classes would be great fun. Really there's so
much I want to do, I doubt a year will be long enough to pack it all in. But
here's to giving it a good try!
Patricia Rosemoor: I've already decided that in 2008 I'm going to
slow down a bit. I've been running full tilt in this business for so long, I
need to breathe once in a while. I thought I might take some time off in the
summer just to do...well, whatever I need to do to make myself happy. Like
executing that mosaic installation in my garden that I've been dreaming of
since last year. I'm hoping that finding balance will regenerate my creative
writing side. That my books will benefit from that. I just worked on a
proposal for the last book in The McKenna Legacy series (the elusive Quin's
story), and I am now thinking about a related series for another branch of
the McKennas cursed never to find love and happiness. I have yet to figure
out how the curse works and how they overcome it. Something very fun to
think about. It has to be right, because once I start the series, I have to
go with whatever I develop. And writers inevitably get new ideas once they
actually start writing....
Susan Kearney: This year I'm making no New Year's resolutions. But
writing-wise, I'm going back to my sexy, futuristic space books in Feb with
Solar Heat. I just finished making the book video and you can
see it on my website.
Then in July I'm doing another single title romantic suspense for Tor and in
Sept I'm in an anthology. Between all that, I'm working on my 09 books,
trying to land my double jumps in figure skating, and working hard to add
arm movements to belly dance moves. In addition, I now have two Boston
Terriers, a bunch of fish and a three foot long iguana.
Delores Fossen: I'm thrilled that 2008 will be busy for me. I'm
finishing up my present series with the release of the Newborn
Conspiracy and The Horseman's Son. Those books will be
released in February and March 2008. Then, in October my new miniseries,
Texas Paternity, begins. Texas Paternity, will
be five stories about lawmen who are doing double duty as single fathers.
As for 2008 research trips, I plan to visit the YO ranch in Bandera, Texas.
I grew up on a ranch/farm so it's familiar ground for me, but I want to get
a feel for how a large ranch operates. I'm also going on an archeological
dig in late May. I'm not sure how I'll use the info in a book, but I'm sure
I'll find a place for it.
Mallory Kane: I don't usually make New Year's resolutions. They just
make me feel guilty. All my goals for 2008 will be centered around writing
my 3-book mini-series scheduled for April, May and June of 2009. It's
daunting to consider writing 3 connected books back to back. Daunting, yet
at the same time really exciting. The series is called Black Hills
Brotherhood. It centers around 3 boys who were rescued from certain
death on a stormy mountain top when they were eleven. Their rescuer, a
Vietnam vet who was an Air Force Combat Rescue Officer, died saving them.
That day they vowed to dedicate their lives to rescuing innocents.
Sylvie Kurtz: I don't do resolutions or year-planning at the
beginning of the year. We all know how those plans tend to go. Instead, I
wait until my birthday month, then I look back at the year that's just gone
by, see how many of my goals I reached, then plan based on that, throwing in
a few pie-in-the-sky goals for good measure. I don't see any big changes on
the horizon for 2008. I have a few short trips planned: New York City in
March; Chicago in May. As for writing, my goal there is to make each story I
write the best I can. I hope to continue writing suspense/adventure/romance
for a long time. I wish all Intrigue readers the best for 2008--health,
happiness and many stories with perfect endings.
Paula Graves: Like a lot of writers, I have a full time day job, so
my goal for 2008 is to get focused and discipline about my writing during
the time I do have available to me. I'd really like to sell at least three
books in 2008 so that I can get my name out there more regularly. I'm also
hoping to get a lot of research done for an ongoing series of thriller-style
stories I'd like to start writing within the next year or so.
